Lauren Sommer

Lauren Sommer is a correspondent with NPR's climate desk, where she covers scientists on the front lines of studying the warming climate and how those changes are affecting communities around the world. She specializes in reporting on disaster response and recovery, as well as biodiversity and oceans issues.
Prior to joining NPR, she spent more than a decade covering climate and environment for KQED Public Radio in San Francisco. Sommer was also host of KQED's macrophotography nature series Deep Look, which searched for universal truths in tiny organisms. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the 2023 Kavli Science Journalism Gold Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for a series looking at the far-reaching impacts of melting polar ice.
