Building Power and Partnerships for AI Accountability
Event Date:
May 21, 2026 | 11:00 AM
May 21, 2026, 11:00am EDT (what time is it for me?)
Moderator: Joanna S. Kao, senior AI editor, Pulitzer Center
Speakers:
- Hajira Maryam, lead adviser on artificial intelligence and strategic communications, Amnesty International's Algorithmic Accountability Lab
- Patricia Clarke, investigative journalist and technology reporter, The Observer
- Valerie Veatch, documentary filmmaker, Ghost in the Machine
- Maria Karienova, AI engagement manager, Pulitzer Center
The dialogue, held in partnership with Amnesty Tech, will highlight how civil society, journalists, activists, and artists hold accountable the harms facilitated by artificial intelligence systems, and potential ways to foster transdisciplinary cooperation for the public interest. Breaking away from silos can be challenging, but it is now more urgent than ever.
This conversation—which was scheduled to happen at RightsCon 2026 in Zambia before it was canceled—will be moderated by Pulitzer Center Senior AI Editor Joanna S. Kao and will feature AI Accountability Fellow Patricia Clarke, from The Observer UK, Hajira Maryam, from Amnesty International's Algorithmic Accountability Lab, and Valerie Veatch, the filmmaker of the documentary Ghost in the Machine.
An audience Q&A will follow the discussion.
We will discuss how each stakeholder approaches accountability around the world, and explore potential collaborations among the disciplines. Each speaker will also share reflections on the challenges of fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and discuss the mechanisms that aim to break down silos and gaps, and how we can collectively address these issues.
