Grantee Will Teach Students How To Humanize Journalism in Cronkite Workshop

In the collaborative workshop "Character Matters," students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University will explore how to find, report, and write about people undergoing or surviving trauma. Pulitzer Center grantee Terry Greene Sterling will take students through the steps and help them figure out how to ethically and accurately humanize journalism.  

Sterling is an independent journalist and editor-at-large at the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting.  A three-time Virg Hill Arizona Journalist of the Year, she is the co-author of Driving While Brown, one of NPR’s Best Books of the Year for 2021, and a finalist for the Investigative Reporters and Editors book award.

In 2022, she received a Pulitzer Center grant to embed with women searching for lost loved ones in Mexico. Her story on their neglected mental health needs appeared in Slate, Letras Libres, and palabra., a multimedia platform of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. 

This workshop is open to all Cronkite students. Students are urged to check with their Cronkite instructors about earning extra credit for participation. No RSVP is required.
