What's Left Behind: Afghanistan after 'Heartbreak of U.S. Departure'

Join the Pulitzer Center and Elon University on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 6:30pm EST for a conversation with award-winning journalist Jane Ferguson, who recently returned from Afghanistan. 

Ferguson will share her insights and discuss the current state of affairs in Afghanistan. After nearly two decades of war — followed by the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the Taliban takeover, the future of the country and its 40 million inhabitants is very much in question. 

Ferguson reported on the ground from Kabul during the U.S.-led evacuations for PBS NewsHour and NPR, as part of her Pulitzer Center-supported project, Afghanistan: After the Americans. It marked her third trip to the country so far this year, as part of her coverage for NewsHour. 

She investigated how dwindling aid, a crumbling economy, and ISIS are adding to Afghans’ hardships under Taliban rule.

Ferguson is a DuPont, Emmy, Peabody, and Polk award-winning foreign correspondent for NewsHour, with over 13 years of experience living in the Middle East and reporting from the Arab world, Africa, and South Asia.
