Talks @ Pulitzer: Ocean Health with Craig Welch

Join us on Wednesday, March 19 for a talks @ pulitzer with Craig Welch, environmental reporter for The Seattle Times and grantee journalist on the Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project "Sea Change: The Pacific's Perilous Turn."

With excessive CO2 emissions from many regions around the world, ocean chemistry has been changing at an unprecedented rate. Ocean acidification is one of the biggest environmental threats facing the planet. With complicated science underpinning this phenomenon, no major news organization had attempted a deep and thorough analysis of the consequences--until now. Welch and Seattle Times photographer Steve Ringman used multimedia reporting and platforms to bring the issue of changing sea acidity to life.

With Pulitzer Center support, Welch and Ringman traveled from Arctic Alaska, the nation's fish basket, to the American Northwest, where consequences are showing up now, to the Coral Triangle in the South Pacific, the most significant cluster of marine biodiversity anywhere in the world, and a place where millions of people rely for subsistence on marine life threatened by acidification. Welch has been at The Seattle Times for more than 12 years reporting extensively on various environmental issues. Welch's reporting also has been published in Smithsonian magazine, The Washington Post, and Newsweek.

We'll start the evening with a light reception at 5:30 pm, followed by remarks at 6 pm.
