Students from Hardy Middle School in Washington, DC, exhibit their photography at the Pulitzer Center on Thursday, January 26, 2017, featuring work they created as part of a series of "Walk Like a Journalist" workshops, inspired by Paul Salopek and his Out of Eden Walk.

The reporting and photography workshops in late 2016 examine the methods of the Out of Eden Walk reporting project launched in early 2013 by the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Salopek plans to walk approximately 21,000 miles along one potential migratory path our ancestors are believed to have taken from Africa to South America over the course of roughly 50,000 years. Salopek's goal throughout his Out of Eden Walk, anticipated to take at least a decade now to complete, is to take a slow approach to reporting that allows readers to reflect on how the small things we notice as we walk through the world reveal larger international issues.

The Hardy Middle School students started their "Walk Like a Journalist" program by exploring photographs, interviews and video from Salopek's project to analyze what a "slow approach" to journalism can reveal about the world. Next, they met with photojournalist Allison Shelley at Pulitzer Center's office to learn reporting and photography skills that they then applied to a reporting assignment in Dupont Circle.

At the conclusion of the second workshop, students were tasked with completing their own slow reporting projects in their communities. At the final workshop, students reflected on their experience reporting in Dupont Circle and discussed tips for revising photos and captions before publishing. Students then shared images and captions from the reporting projects in their communities and worked in small groups to revise their projects.

Hardy Middle School students, faculty and families are welcome to join us at the Pulitzer Center office for the January 26 exhibition of the "Walk Like a Journalist" photographs and reports that students created as part of the workshop process. Light refreshments provided.
