Join the Pulitzer Center at Texas Christian University, one of our newest Campus Consortium partners, on Thursday, March 23, 2017, for a symposium examining risks to journalists reporting from around the world, how these professionals work under such situations and the impact on them of the changing media landscape.
The panelists include Michael Scott Moore, Pulitzer Center journalist grantee; Jon Sawyer, Pulitzer Center executive director; Daxton Stewart, associate dean at the Bob Schieffer College of Communication and an associate professor in the School of Journalism; Amiso George, associate professor of Strategic Communication at TCU; and Kem Sawyer, Pulitzer Center contributing editor.
Moore reflects upon his nearly three-year ordeal as a captive of Somali pirates. Moore, who holds both U.S. and German citizenship, traveled to Somalia in early 2012 to report on the pirates who were wreaking havoc on the shipping lanes off the Horn of Africa. Careful plans for his security were in place, but even his most careful plans went awry when the car he was traveling in was ambushed by a dozen gunmen along the airport road in Galkacyo. He has written for numerous outlets including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic and The Los Angeles Times. For his most recent Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project. Moore investigates abuses along the Mediterranean migrant trail and the extent of organized-crime involvement between Somalia and the shores of Europe.
Jon Sawyer, who reported for more than three decadese with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch before founding the Pulitzer Center, discusses the demands of journalism in a rapidly changing environment. Sawyer's projects for the Pulitzer Center include reporting from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Bangladesh, China, Haiti, and the Caucasus, and his work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, al Jazeera English, Nieman Reports, To the Point, and PBS NewsHour.
The symposium is an event in collaboration with the TCU Department of Journalism and as part of the Campus Consortium partnership between the Pulitzer Center and TCU's Bob Schieffer College of Communication.
