The Nuba Mountains became a refuge. That safety is now unravelling.
Three-time Pulitzer Center grantee Sophie Neiman will join students and faculty at Davidson College for a multi-day campus visit on October 12-13, 2026.
On Monday, October 12, 2026 at 4:30pm, Neiman will deliver a lecture titled "Media Matters: Covering Sudan's Civil War" in which she will explain how she traveled through Rapid Support Forces-aligned territory to bring back stories of civilians caught in Sudan's war, and why these narratives matter. She will also discuss how Sudan has slipped from the headlines, despite being the world's largest displacement crisis, and the devastating consequences of that lack of attention.
The following day, Neiman will host office hours with students, facilitate a workshop with The Davidsonian staff and writers, and visit the college’s Comparative Politics class.
Neiman is a freelance journalist covering politics, conflict, and human rights across East and Central Africa. Her reporting and photography have appeared in Al Jazeera, The Christian Science Monitor, New Internationalist, The New York Review of Books, and World Politics Review, among others.
Neiman has received Pulitzer Center grants for three reporting projects: Charting Conflict and Corruption—Uganda and the DRC, Women and War in Eastern Congo, and most recently Fragile Safety in the Nuba Mountains.
Her most recent Pulitzer Center-supported project investigates how a new alliance between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan’s most feared paramilitary, is reshaping the conflict in the Nuba Mountains, placing civilians at greater risk and revealing the escalating human cost of the war.
