Pulitzer Center 2021 Post Grad Reporting Fellow Shane Burke will visit Syracuse University on October 2, 2024. There, he will speak in classes, meet with students, and deliver a presentation on his Pulitzer Center-supported project, A "Prevention Revolution" Offers Hope in the World’s Largest HIV Epidemic, and his experience as a visual data journalist.
In 2022, with the help of the Pulitzer Center, Burke explored how a "revolution" of new forms of HIV prevention medicine could impact the HIV epidemic for young women in South Africa, where over 7 million people live with HIV. This work culminated in a feature in The Nation, and led to freelance coverage of HIV/AIDS science for POZ, including live coverage of the 2022 International AIDS Conference in Montreal.
Burke is a data journalist focused on what’s next in technology, science, policy, and culture. He combines data analysis and narrative reporting to shed light on pressing issues and trends. Since 2022, Burke has been a visual and data journalist at technology publication The Information, creating graphics, data projects, and art on topics spanning the tech industry, in addition to analyzing and interpreting data for coverage.
