Photographs from Pulitzer Center grantee Michael O. Snyder’s project, The Queens of Queen City, will be featured in an exhibition at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland, Maryland.
The photographs in the show, organized by the Allegany Arts Council, celebrate Cumberland’s thriving drag scene in the struggling Appalachian city. Snyder explores themes of queer identity and the backlash LGBTQ+ communities face in the United States. Snyder’s work was published alongside narrative journalism and commentary from oral historian and Pulitzer Center grantee Rae Garringer.
A native of the “Queen City,” Snyder has received recognition for his work, including an honorable mention in the 2023 ZEKE Awards. He was also a finalist in the LensCulture Portrait Awards.
There will be a special opening event for the exhibition on July 29, 2023, 6:00-8:00pm EDT. The exhibition will run July 29-August 19, and will be free and open to the public 11:00am-5:00pm EDT daily.
