The Pulitzer Center staff, Fellows, and grantees will gather at the 20th African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) taking place October 30-November 1, 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This year, the Pulitzer Center delegates will speak across 6 panels and training sessions, covering tips for pitching grant proposals, AI reporting and Open Source Investigation Techniques (OSINT) tools, and in-depth environmental reporting in Africa, among others.

We will also host a networking session to share tips and tools on how journalists can collaborate with the Pulitzer Center.

Pitch Perfect: How To Prepare That Winning Grant Proposal

Also, one of our grantees will share how she connected with the Pulitzer Center at AIJC last year, where she got tips and tools that helped her to work on a successful application few months after the Conference.

Reporting on AI: A Beginner's Guide

This session offered by the Pulitzer Center is designed for reporters with minimal or no knowledge of AI who are interested in getting started. Perhaps you are on the education beat, keen to dive into the way AI is entering the classroom; perhaps you are on the breaking news desk, increasingly being asked to write about the latest AI claims from Elon Musk. We will begin with the basics, covering the history of AI, how the technology works, and key technical concepts such as “neural networks” and “deep learning.

Introduction to OSINT

For journalists with limited or no experience in open source investigations, with a focus on environmental topics. You'd like to produce in-depth investigations on deforestation or climate change in Africa. You don't, however, know how to: find relevant information online, use innovative open source methodologies, verify your information, and combine this information with field data to produce a strong story. We'll start with the fundamentals of open source (OSINT) investigations then look at online research tools and techniques relevant to environmental investigations. We'll zoom in on recent articles to show you how to combine both research and fieldwork to improve the quality and integrity of your investigations.

The Foreign Influence on Girls and Women's Reproductive Rights

Foreign influence and interference has negatively impacted access to reproductive rights in parts of Africa. This session examines the work of evangelical, U.S.-funded crisis pregnancy centers and their tactics of fear mongering, presenting misinformation, and the finance right-wing lobby groups in Africa.
