On October 23, 2024, Pulitzer Center grantee Nitashia Johnson will lead a virtual workshop at Las Fotos Project, a photography mentoring organization for youth of color in Los Angeles.
Johnson reported The Faces that Face, with support from the Pulitzer Center and Diversify Photo’s Eyewitness Photojournalism grant. The project portrays seven people who live near heavy industry in West Dallas, Texas. It puts faces to the consequences of environmental racism and points to possible solutions in community action and data collection.
Las Fotos Project aims to “elevate the voices of teenage girls and gender-expansive youth from communities of color through photography and mentoring, empowering them to channel their creativity for the benefit of themselves, their community, and future careers,” according to its website. The organization offers three semester-long education programs taught by working artists. It also supports community outreach and engagement efforts in Los Angeles.
The workshop will take place during Las Fotos’ Digital Promotoras course. During the course, students learn to “use imagery to expose hidden truths about their own communities and advocate for change,” according to Las Fotos Project’s website.
