Journalists from the Pulitzer Center’s Ocean Reporting Network (ORN), along with experts from data platforms Global Fishing Watch and SkyTruth, will share how they harness open data to uncover and report on human activities at sea.

The panel—part of the Our Ocean Conference in Busan, South Korea, April 28-30, 2025—will explore how these collaborations translate complex datasets into powerful stories with real-world impact, highlighting successes, challenges, and key lessons learned along the way.

Participants in the panel include:

  • Kuek Ser Kuang Keng: the Pulitzer Center's data editor, environmental investigations
  • Joanna Buckley: senior adviser of international policy at Global Fishing Watch
  • Mitchelle De Leon: chief impact officer at SkyTruth, a conservation technology nonprofit
  • Abdus Somad: 2023 Ocean Reporting Network Fellow
  • Elizabeth Alberts: 2024 Ocean Reporting Network Fellow
