On October 11, 2024, Northwestern University will host a Medill Friday event on “Trauma-Informed Journalism, Self-Care, and Mental Well-Being” for graduate students.
The morning will begin with training from the Dart Center by John Barth. The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, works for informed, innovative, and ethical news reporting on violence, conflict, and tragedy, according to the group's website.
Then, Pulitzer Center grantee Justin Maxon will present on his experiences working in collaborative, responsive, and trauma-informed visual storytelling. Students will also hear from Josh McGhee, an investigative reporter covering the intersection of criminal justice and mental health for MindSite News, and Emanuella Evans, a 2021 Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow from Medill, who reported on The War After The War.
Students will engage with the speakers in collaborative, small-group conversations.
