Let’s start with a number: USD $23 billion. That is the estimated annual loss worldwide caused by illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing—accounting for 20% of the global seafood catch.
The problem does not only have a financial impact. Marine ecosystems, coastal communities, fishermen’s livelihoods, and human rights are on the line. And IUU fishing is hard to combat because jurisdiction in the ocean is a complex issue.
Join the Pulitzer Center on Tuesday, June 11, at 4:00pm GMT for a webinar with Global Fishing Watch (GFW) and The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) to equip journalists with resources, reporting methodologies, and relevant technology to cover IUU fishing.
Panelists:
- Philip Jacobson (ORN Fellow 2023/Mongabay)
- Sarah Bladen (Global Fishing Watch)
- Adel Heenan (Global Fishing Watch)
- Steve Trent (Environmental Justice Foundation)
What journalists will learn:
- Case study from an ORN Fellow
- How to use Global Fishing Watch (GFW) as a resource to investigate and monitor IUU fishing
- How to use Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) to generate reporting leads about IUU fishing
- A breakdown of the upcoming Pulitzer Center toolkit, "How To Investigate IUU Fishing"
