Children wearing the uniform of Communist youth are prepared to salute “Votó!” (“He voted!”), as a woman places her ballot in Cuba’s Elecciones Parciales (Partial Elections). The vote was to elect delegates to the Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power, the country’s unicameral parliament, on April 19, in Havana. The delegates function as district representatives for a two-and-a-half-year term. Image by Yana Paskova. Cuba, 2015.

Born in Bulgaria before the fall of the Berlin Wall, photojournalist Yana Paskova brings a unique perspective to covering the ebb and flow of communism in a country like Cuba. Paskova visits Elon University on Thursday, October 22, to tell her personal story and discuss her Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project on the intersection of democracy and communism in Cuba.

In a photo essay for The New York Times Paskova captures the spirit of Cuban youth at a pivotal moment as the country's relationship with the United States enters a new chapter. She describes her work as "simply a childhood relived," seeing herself as a young girl in a red scarf, saluting voters, as the children in some of her images do. Paskova shares her observations of today's Cuba, and what she sees in the country's future, during this visit to Elon University, which also includes class visits and a main lecture.
