Journalist Amal Ahmed will visit the University of Missouri to talk about her Pulitzer Center-funded reporting from the front lines of climate change on the Texas Coast, where a massive expansion of export-oriented fossil fuel infrastructure threatens to harm local residents and increase carbon emissions globally. For the Texas Observer, Amal reported on how communities deep in one of the most oil- and gas-friendly states are fighting back against industry and pollution. She will share her tips for covering environmental justice and tell how to use data and on-the-ground reporting to find the story behind the story.
Ahmed is a journalist based in Dallas, covering climate and the environment for Floodlight News. Previously, she was a reporter at the Texas Observer and a fact-checker at Texas Monthly, and her work has been published in outlets such as Southerly, The Atlantic, CityLab, The Texas Tribune, The Guardian, The Nation, and Popular Science. She graduated from Northwestern University in 2018.
Coffee and pastries will be held at 9:00am. The presentation will begin at 9:30am and will be live-streamed on the Missouri School of Journalism’s Facebook page.
