How can we understand and contest the global wave of violence against women? In The Struggle for Freedom from Fear: Contesting Violence against Women at the Frontiers of Globalization, Alison Brysk shows that gender violence across countries tends to change as countries develop and liberalize, but not in the ways that we might predict.
On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, Pulitzer Center Executive Editor Indira Lakshmanan moderates a conversation at the Wilson Center with Brysk, Pulitzer Center grantee Sarah Aziza, Mary Ellsberg, and Susan A. Markham.
The conversation will be centered on Byrsk's new book, which examines the impact of gender violence as a worldwide problem. Among her findings, Brysk shows how liberalizing authoritarian countries and transitional democracies may experience more shifting patterns and greater levels of violence against women than less developed and democratic countries, due to changes and uncertainties in economic and political structures.
