The Pulitzer Center Rainforest Investigations Network will host a panel on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 6:00pm (GMT -3) to discuss the Behind the Scenes of Amazon Underworld: A Cross-Border Investigation Into the Criminal Networks That Run the Amazon.

Amazon Underworld is a project that maps the presence of armed groups across Amazonian borders and presents a series of in-depth reports on various aspects of the region’s organized criminal groups and operations, many of which have received little or no media coverage.

Between May 2022 and July 2023, the team of 37 journalists and media professionals from 11 countries ventured into rarely explored corners of the Amazon to understand its criminal ecosystem.

Criminals take advantage of the region’s porous borders, countless rivers, and myriad clandestine airstrips to transport drugs and gold that feed insatiable global markets.

Panelists:

  • Gustavo Faleiros, editor of the Pulitzer Center Environmental Investigations Unit
  • Bram Ebus, investigative journalist and Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow 2022
  • Rodrigo Pedroso, investigative journalist
  • Manaka Infante, senior program officer of Open Society Foundations
