Amy Toensing Speaks at Guilford College about Widows Project

In some parts of the world, a husband's death brings his widow not only personal grief but also a new life of extraordinary hardship, poverty, powerlessness, and abuse.

Pulitzer Center grantee and photojournalist Amy Toensing discusses her Pulitzer Center-supported reporting on widows around the world during a multi-day visit to Guilford College. Toensing worked with writer Cynthia Gorney and video producer Kathryn Carlson to produce "For Widows: Life After Loss," an extensive story and multimedia presentation in National Geographic. 

"A World of Widows," Toensing's main lecture during her Guilford College visit, is set for Monday, April 3, 2017. Toensing will describe her reporting on how widows in many parts of the world must deal with hardships many of us never think about. The widows themselves are their own eloquent biographers–as are the local social workers, lawyers and charity organizations now helping these women find a stronger voice and perhaps a more joyful life.

Toensing has been a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine for over a decade and recently completed her 13th feature story for them. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, Smithsonian, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and Time.

Guilford College is a Campus Consortium partner with the Pulitzer Center.
