The Roze Filmdagen Film Festival, Amsterdam's LGBT Film Festival in Netherlands, offers two screenings of "The Abominable Crime" on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 23. The screenings mark the premiere of the film in the Netherlands.
The full-length documentary explores homophobia in Jamaica through the lives of several individuals including Simone Edwards, who survives a hate crime shooting and flees the country to the Netherlands to protect herself and her daughter, and Maurice Tomlinson, who is a human rights lawyer whose marriage to a man exposes him to personal danger. These intimate first-person narratives show the dangers and discrimination gay and lesbian people are faced with in Jamaica, and reveal the psychological and social impacts of adapting to life after surviving in a homeland that rejects your way of living.
Edwards, Tomlinson and Pulitzer Center grantee filmmaker Micah Fink join the screening on Sunday, March 23.
