The Arctic is changing faster than any other region on the planet, losing record amounts of floating ice while its ecosystems are transforming in real time. But few scientists have studied it during the mysterious polar night, the four-month period of virtual darkness that envelops the Arctic each winter. THAW is a documentary series about a two-week trek aboard the Helmer Hanssen, a Norwegian research vessel. The series uncovers a radically changing winter ecosystem including a new invasion of southern species into the Arctic. It also uncovers how changes in the region are affecting global weather, supercharging storms, heatwaves and droughts across the planet. Eli Kintisch wrote and produced the series for Vox Video.
