News Bite Lesson: "Fight for Fallujah," a virtual-reality film
Grades:
What is the significance of Falluja?
How is war depicted in popular culture? Compare this to what Solomon shows you in this piece.
How does the Iraqi army look/behave? Is this different from the way you imagine your country’s army?
Use the virtual reality feature to see a 360-view of the cells in which ISIS held their prisoners (circa minute 7). What does this tell you about the conditions for prisoners? How does the use of virtual reality inform this understanding? What would it be like to be held in one of these cells?
Why did Solomon use virtual reality to tell this story? What is the impact? How does this film differ from two-dimensional video or documentary?

Discussion:
Look back at the images you brainstormed in the warm up. How do these images differ from what you saw in the film? What do you think is the impact of seeing the taking of Fallujah in virtual-reality? Do you think more reporting should be done using this medium?
