Finding & analyzing underreported news stories: Critical thinking, text analysis and writing

SECTIONS
  1. Warm up: Students reflect on the definition of "news," where students get their news, what stories they see, and what stories they want to see
  2. Introducing Ways to Find and Evaluate Under-reported Stories: Students the videos "What are under-reported stories, and why do they matter?" and "How to find and analyze under-reported stories" from Pulitzer Center's editorial team
  3. Read and Analyze: Students pick two news articles that interest them, summarize the articles, and use what they learned from the instructional videos to evaluate why the stories are considered under-reported.

  4. Practice: Students try the three methods outlined in the video "How to find and analyze under-reported stories" to plan reporting projects.

  5. Extension Activities: Students apply what they have learned to embark on a reporting project, or research project.
