Composing Photographs and Creating Exhibition Narratives

Warm up: Students review the term phot0journalist and brainstorm objects they could photograph in their classrooms to communicate everyday life in their school.

Introducing the Lesson: Students review the mission of Everyday Africa, explore a video from Everyday Africa contributor Allison Shelley about the types of photos she uses to tell stories, and brainstorm photos they could compose in their communities to represent everyday life in their communities.

Extension Activity 1: Students practice composing action, detail, landscape and portrait images that communicate everyday life at their school.

Extension Activity 2: Using images from the Everyday Africa and/or Everyday DC projects, studnets practice organizing images, writing wall titles, and drafting entry text for photography exhibitions.
