Analyzing North Koreans’ Flight to Freedom on the ‘Underground Railroad’

Warm-up: Listen to the North Korean national anthem to draw comparisons between the experiences of students from the U.S. and North Korea. 

Introducing the Lesson: Explore the totalitarian government in North Korea, and how its citizens are able to make it to South Korea with their lives intact. 

Analyzing the Reporting: Analyze a news story that recounts one woman's flight from North Korea, her motivations for leaving and the dangers she faced along the way.

Extension Activities:

1. Connections to current events: Compare the routes taken by "Faith" and her family with the ones taken by families who are migrating to the United States.  

2. Connections to history: Discover the similarities and differences between North Korea's Underground Railroad and the Underground Railroad that enslaved people used to travel to freedom in the United States. 

3. Creating a graphic novel: Create a graphic novel depicting "Faith"’s experience on the Underground Railroad.
