We're proud to announce that a number of our grantees have been recognized in this year's Pictures of the Year International competition. The oldest photojournalism contest in the world, POYi honors the work of documentary photographers as well as magazine, newspaper and freelance photojournalists.

Photojournalist Louie Palu won second place in the single portraits category for an image of a young Mexican woman in a shelter for deportees taken the night after she was deported from the United States. The Pulitzer Center provided Palu with a grant for his reporting from the U.S.-Mexico border, part of the project which Palu conducted as a Bernard L. Schwartz Fellow with the New America Foundation.

The Pulitzer Center's
"Voices of Haiti" was given the jury's special recognition in the "Best E-books" category of the competition. The book tells the stories of a post-quake Haiti in a mesmerizing presentation that combines the poetry of Kwame Dawes, the prose of Lisa Armstrong, the photography of Andre Lambertson and the music of Kevin Simmonds.

"Life Without Lights," a long-term project by "World Understanding Award." The project focuses on the quarter of humanity living without access to electricity, documenting cases in Ghana, England, the United States and Iraqi Kurdistan. The Pulitzer Center supported DiCampo's project on cocoa production in Ivory Coast, where he collaborated with journalist Austin Merill to produce

Grantee Stephanie Sinclair, along with fellow photographer Jessica Dimmock, placed second in the "Issue Reporting Multimedia" category for their story on Destaye, a young Ethiopian girl who was married at age 11 and now at age 15 has a child. The Pulitzer Center supported Sinclair's related multi-media documentary on child brides,
"Too Young to Wed: the Secret World of Child Brides," which won second place last year in the POYi category of "Issue Reporting Multimedia."
