Author:

The Pulitzer Center will welcome Karima Haynes on May 28 to our team as the new director of the Campus Consortium Reporting Fellows Program.

Haynes will work together with current Reporting Fellows Program Director Kem Knapp Sawyer during the transition, including with the orientation of the 2024 Reporting Fellows cohort. Sawyer ends her tenure at the Pulitzer Center on June 7.

The Campus Consortium is a network of more than 40 diverse institutions of higher education primarily in North America that includes state universities, liberal arts colleges, journalism and public health schools, historically Black colleges and universities, and community colleges.

“Karima brings years of experience in the world of journalism and in higher education. I’m excited for our Reporting Fellows and Campus Consortium partners to work with her, and I’m confident I am leaving them in very good hands!” said Sawyer.

Haynes comes to the Pulitzer Center from Bowie State University, where she has taught for 18 years and held positions as an assistant professor, coordinator for the print journalism concentration, and advisor to The Spectrum student newspaper. She has two decades of experience as a newspaper reporter and magazine writer for outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Ebony, and Providence Journal-Bulletin. Her work also has been published in The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Jet magazine.

Haynes earned her undergraduate degree from Clark Atlanta University, master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University Medill, and doctorate in educational leadership from Bowie State University. She also was a 2019 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard.

“The Reporting Fellows program plays an essential role in developing the next generation of journalists who give voice to complex global issues with enterprise and empathy,” Haynes said. “I am elated to be part of the team!”
