Ukraine’s battle to repel Russia is a fight for the country’s survival as a Western-facing democracy, but the demands of war mean some aspects of democracy have been put on hold. Elections have been postponed, the media operates under restrictions, corruption is doggedly persistent and military conscription curbs the freedom of millions of citizens to decide their own fate.

Associated Press journalists Illia Novikov and Alex Babenko in Kyiv contributed to this story. Production: Luke Garratt.
