Japan has engineered a revolutionary idea: dementia villages. These are communities where the local residents are trained by Alzheimer's and dementia associations to aid older people who suffer from cognitive impairments. This all falls under 'The Orange Plan," a comprehensive package of measures to take on dementia, ranging from specialized medical staff and the development of new drugs, to regular home visits and support for family caregivers.

Japan's birth rate has dropped by approximately 50 percent since 1960, while the growing population of people over the age of 65 is expected to rise, putting a great strain on health and welfare services in Japan. Community, along with a specially grown mushroom, is helping to make a difference in this crisis.
