John Perry

GRANTEE

John Perry is technical director of the Data Journalism Team at The Atlanta-Journal Constitution. He has more than 25 years of experience as a data journalist working at The Oklahoman newspaper in Oklahoma City, the investigative journalism nonprofit Center for Public Integrity, and since 2008 at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Perry started at the AJC as a member of the investigative team. He was part of a three-member reporting team that uncovered systematic cheating on state standardized tests throughout the Atlanta Public School District, an effort that won the 2012 Hillman Prize in Newspaper Journalism. The team went on to investigate cheating nationally and uncovered hundreds of districts with suspicious test result patterns similar to those found in Atlanta, a project that was a 2013 Goldsmith Prize finalist.

Perry became technical director of the AJC’s data journalism team when it was created in 2014. Before coming to Atlanta, Perry was a senior computer-assisted reporting fellow at the Center for Public Integrity, where he contributed to investigations of local policies that contributed to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, the campaign consulting industry, lobbyist-financed travel by Congress members and their staffs, and U.S. government contracting in Iraq.

As a reporter and editor at The Oklahoman, Perry was part of a team covering victims and survivors of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, producing a series of stories that won the 1996 Dart Award for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma.
