Grantee Lisa Armstrong will visit SUNY Westchester Community College on Thursday, March 21, 2024, for a “Meet the Pros” event with the Department of Communications and Media Arts. Armstrong will speak with students interested in journalism and communications about reporting at juvenile detention facilities and trauma-informed reporting.
Armstrong is an award-winning journalist with credits in The Intercept, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, USA TODAY, and other outlets. She is currently reporting on incarceration. She has written about the spread of COVID-19 in New York state prisons and produced a documentary for CBS News about the role that mental health care provided by for-profit companies has played in an increase in suicides in state prisons. Her Pulitzer-supported project, Trouble in Texas: Neglect, Abuse at State Juvenile Detention Facilities, explores the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD)’s long and well-documented history of neglect and abuse.
