Journalists Dan Sagalyn and Jamie McIntyre Visit University of Chicago

On Tuesday, May 10, 2016, Pulitzer Center journalist grantees Dan Sagalyn and Jamie McIntyre speak at the University of Chicago about their project, Rearming: America's New Nuclear Arsenal.

Pulitzer Center senior editor Tom Hundley joins them as part of their two-day visit to Campus Consortium partner University of Chicago. John Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, will moderate the main talk on May 10 at 5 pm.

With Pulitzer Center support, Sagalyn and McIntyre explored America's aging nuclear arsenal in a multi-part series for PBS NewsHour, with the most recent reporting coming out a month before the Chicago visit. While much attention has focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and fighting Al Qaeda and the Islamic State over the last decade, the next three decades will be a time when the Pentagon plans to spend an estimated $1 trillion to buy a new generation of nuclear weapons to replace the current arsenal.

The Obama administration, along with military commanders and some members of Congress, say nuclear weapons make a difference every day in deterring attacks against the United States. They argue that the current stockpile must be replaced because it is old and could break down. Their highest priority is building 12 new submarines.

Sagalyn is the PBS NewsHour's deputy senior producer for foreign affairs and defense. He has been at the PBS NewsHour since 1996. McIntyre is Al Jazeera America's National Security Correspondent, on special assignment for the PBS NewsHour. McIntyre was an NPR All Things Considered newscaster from 2011 to 2014. He also was CNN's senior Pentagon correspondent from 1992 to 2008.
