Award-winning illustrator George Butler explores the issues of family, tragedy, and perseverance amid the chaos of war during his visit to Georgetown as part of a collaboration between the university’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Pulitzer Center.

While reporting on the war in Ukraine, Butler created art that “goes beyond mere representation; his drawings serve as a profound introduction to the people behind the headlines,” the Berkley Center wrote.

Butler’s 2022 article in the Virginia Quarterly Review received the American Society of Magazine Editors' Award in the Best Illustrated Story category for the Pulitzer Center-supported story “Drawn to War: A Ukraine Journal.” His reporting from Ukraine laid the groundwork for his book Ukraine: Remember Also Me, set for publication October 1, 2024.

Butler will be in conversation with Georgetown professor Lise M. Howard, whose focus in teaching and research is on matters of war, peace, and security. Georgetown is part of the Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium network.

Registration is required for this in-person event. For more information, please visit the Berkley Center
