Pregnant, Deported, Stateless: The Stories of Haitian Women in the Dominican Republic

While different countries around the world continue to deport Haitian migrants, the Dominican Republic has cracked down on them in an unusual way. Pregnant Haitian migrants and women of Haitian descent have been deported from the Dominican Republic to Haiti. Even in the context of a fraught immigration history between the two countries, this is an unprecedented tactic.

This project seeks to not only tell the stories of Haitian women who have been victims of deportations and obstetric violence, but to also highlight the stigma and gender discrimination they face due to current Dominican migration laws.

The investigation will also show how a court’s decision from 2013 is still affecting people of Haitan descent who were left stateless after being stripped of their Dominican nationality. Women have been more severely impacted, as they pass their undocumented status on to their offspring.

This story will be published as a Spanish-language podcast episode, distributed in all platforms and El Hilo’s website; an English version of the episode will be released by the podcast VICE News Reports. Mientras diferentes países del mundo siguen deportando a los migrantes haitianos, la República Dominicana ha tomado medidas drásticas contra ellos de una manera inusual. Las migrantes haitianas embarazadas y las mujeres de ascendencia haitiana han sido deportadas de la República Dominicana a Haití.
