Hundreds of Pakistani wives of former militants, who had traveled to Pakistan for arms training when the insurgency began in the 1990s, came to Kashmir with their families over a decade ago. Most of them came after the surrender and rehabilitation policy for militants was introduced by then-chief minister Omar Abdullah in 2010. Since then, these women have been stuck in Kashmir, requesting travel documents from the Indian government or being deported to Pakistan.
