The Great Green Wall project hopes to slow the southward expansion of the Sahara Desert by planting a wall of trees across the African continent from Senegal to Djibouti. As rainfall in the Sahel region continues to decline and local residents report seeing the emergence of desert species outside the Sahara, leaders from 11 African countries are trying to collaborate on the ambitious plan. Bobby Bascomb visited Senegal, the country furthest along with the project, to report on desertification in the Sahel and the feasibility of the Green Wall initiative.
