The New Yorker documentary Reeducated, a film supported by the Pulitzer Center,  has won a Peabody Award.

This is the first Peabody for The New Yorker, the magazine said on May 9. The awards honor "excellence in storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day," according to the Peabody's website. This is the 83rd annual awards.

Reeducated, a virtual-reality documentary by grantees Sam Wolson and Ben Mauk, gives viewers a glimpse inside one of Xinjiang’s secret detention camps, where Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities were subjected to brutal repression and indoctrination. Based on the testimony of multiple survivors, the project uses hand-drawn animation and immersive video to re-create the conditions and experiences inside the camp.

The film also provides additional context and analysis about China's campaign of persecution in Xinjiang, which is likely the largest mass internment of ethnic and religious minorities since World War II.

The documentary is part of the Pulitzer Center-supported project Survival in Xinjiang. It won an Emmy in September 2022. According to The New Yorker, Wolson will accept the Peabody Award on behalf of the magazine at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles on June 11. (See the other Peabody Award winners here.)

“Here, art links to memory, humanity, and justice,” said the Peabody Awards judges’ comments. “Under the highest journalistic standards, the Reeducated team immerses viewers into the extreme anxiety, fear, and suffering that over a million people—and counting—continue to endure. For co-creating powerful immersive evidence of life inside mass internment camps and bearing witness to the profound resolve of survivors in defense of their personal and collective humanity, Reeducated wins a Peabody.”

“The Reeducated project is an extraordinary journalistic accomplishment, using innovative storytelling techniques to give audiences an unprecedented understanding of one of the worst human-rights abuses in decades. I’m so proud of The New Yorker team behind this work and honored by the recognition from the Peabody jurors,” said David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker.
