Journalists work to uncover crime dynamics in the Amazon.

The Gabo Foundation, created by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, has recently announced the 50 nominees for the 12th edition of the Gabo Prize, which recognizes journalism in Spanish and Portuguese that upholds standards of quality, rigor, and contribution to the strengthening of democracy.

Three Pulitzer Center-supported projects were nominated for this year’s Gabo Prize: Amazon Underworld, supported by the Rainforest Investigations Network (RIN); Bukele: The Man From Los Sueños; and Reports of a War Correspondent in the Amazon, a film supported by the Dom Phillips grant from the Rainforest Reporting Grant.

To arrive at the shortlist, 2,170 projects were considered in the five categories of the contest: audio, coverage, photography, image, and text. The materials were evaluated by an independent jury composed of 77 internationally renowned journalists from all corners of Ibero-America.

Stories shortlisted address migration, organized-crime groups, citizen security, and global challenges such as climate change and disinformation.

“Each of the 50 nominees are a faithful demonstration of this year's Gabo Prize slogan, 'Journalism Lives,' which underscores the resilience of the craft in the face of censorship attempts and constant adaptation to new digital and technological platforms, and a commitment to truth and narrative innovation,” highlights the Gabo team in its announcement.

In addition, the Pulitzer Center will be promoting two panels at the Gabo Festival, an event that will take place July 5-7 in Bogota: "Demystifying AI and Investigating Its Impacts," with Karen Hao, lead designer in the Pulitzer Center's AI Spotlight Series, and Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Network Fellow Tatiana Dias, and "Voices From the Global South: Communities, Journalism, and Climate Emergency."

The finalists for the awards, three in each category, will be announced through the Gabo Foundation's channels on June 13, and the winners will be announced on the first day of the Gabo Festival. The opening event will be broadcast live on the Gabo Foundation's YouTube and Facebook channels.
