Nathalie Applewhite, the Pulitzer Center's associate director, took part in two events at the 2008 SilverDocs Film Festival, hosted by the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel in Washington, DC.

Nathalie hosted a "Silver Sessions" talk at 10:30 am on June 20. The small sessions are meant to acquaint journalists with media models related to international development. Applewhite spoke on the Pulitzer Center's initiatives in a talk called "Small Grants, Big Impact."

'Groundbreaking content on the Web for Educators'
At 11:30 am, Nathalie joined a panel discussion on "Groundbreaking Content on the Web for Educators." Joined by professionals from international, commercial and private media, as well as executives from humanitarian aid organizations, the panel discussed how educators can best use award-winning and innovative media content that is now readily available on the web.

"House Call in Hell"
"House Call in Hell," a video examining overcrowding, poor sanitation and disease in Haiti's National Penitentiary, was selected as one of the five short documentaries from the online Current Rocks SilverDocs competition.
This video was part of a larger reporting project addressing HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Reporter Antigone Barton and filmmaker Steve Sapienza traveled throughout the Caribbean addressing the effect of the disease on a region where HIV/AIDS rates are second only to those in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Sapienza joined the other winners at a screening and panel discussion on June 17 at 2:30 pm. More details.
