Every year, the United Nations’ Conference of the Parties (COP) convenes a global summit to assess progress and commit next steps to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling the climate crisis. As the world prepares for COP30, the Pulitzer Center announces two special calls for grant applications aimed at supporting impactful journalism and civil society initiatives.
These grants will support journalists and civil society actors which seek to shed light on critical environmental issues and foster a debate around the global climate crisis.
The editorial grant, designed for journalists, aims to support investigative projects that examine how domestic and international climate policies influence the governance of rainforest and ocean ecosystems. This includes exploring, for example, how regulations—or their absence and misuse—facilitate problematic industrial operations, unsustainable supply chains, and opaque carbon offset schemes.
The engagement grant, targeted at civil society organizations, seeks to support projects that, inspired by journalism, amplify the voices of affected communities, spark public debate, and foster meaningful audience engagement on critical environmental issues. This could include initiatives such as hosting public forums, organizing art exhibitions, or facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogues.
Journalists and civil society actors are encouraged to submit proposals that align with the themes of COP30. The special calls accept applications in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and bahasa Indonesia.
