Here is a picture of a worker applying a coat of lacquer to an item. Lacquer or varnish contains benzene or tuolene, both carcinogenic to humans. The spraying should be done in a ventilated paint booth and the worker should be wearing a respirator mask. On the positive side, the lacquer is sprayed in the direction of a water curtain that will help trap some vapors.
