Located on a mountain desert, Ladakh lies in the northernmost state of India, Jammu and Kashmir. While conventional schools in this area have often failed to educate their students, a school of alternative education has now met with success. The Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh or SECMOL started in 1988 as a movement to bring educational reforms to the state-run schools of Ladakh. Later, SECMOL established a school of alternative education where students live in a learning environment with the staff and the volunteers.
The campus fosters creativity, innovation, and sustainability among the students through a unique curriculum. Chokrap, an 18 year-old teenager from a nearby village, shares his struggle, his dreams, and his hopes. He is one of many students who can thrive in an environment that focuses more on individual learning than academic pressure.
