Grantee Sean Gallagher’s Pulitzer Center-supported short film, Cambodia Burning, won the moving image category in the inaugural year of 1854 Media and British Journal of Photography’s Decade of Change initiative.

Gallagher’s project uses a combination of drone photography and poetry to convey the deforestation crisis facing Cambodia. It’s estimated that up to a quarter of the country’s forests have been decimated over the last 20 years, in large part due to the logging of valuable species for furniture markets and the conversion of forest land for agricultural use.

Gallagher is a longtime Pulitzer Center grantee and an award-winning British photographer and filmmaker based in Beijing. His work focuses on the climate crisis and other global environmental issues, including biodiversity loss, pollution, desertification, and deforestation.

Decade of Change aims to “harness the universal power of photography to galvanise climate action,” the announcement reads.
