When Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province announced its intention to plant a billion trees, many were skeptical, but within the next few years it became the first amongst 45 targets accepted by the BONN Challenge from across the globe to achieve its ambitious goal. "The Billion Tree Tsunami Afforestation Project in Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province has surpassed its target by restoring and planting trees in 350,000 hectares of degraded forest landscapes," BONN Challenge & IUCN reported.

Pakistan ranked seventh in the Global Climate Risk Index 2017 based on weather-related loss events. To reverse this alarming situation, the Billion Trees Tsunami Afforestation Project was launched and successfully executed through a community-based model where rural youth and women grew saplings, which were then planted throughout KPK.

This project documents how a poor province was able to reach such a milestone.
