Agroindustrial Companies and Deforestation, Harmed Communities in Cameroon: The Case of SudCam and Sosucam

In Cameroon, the industrial company SudCam, specialized in the cultivation of rubber trees, has cleared more than 10,000 hectares of rainforest in the southern region of the country in order to replace them with vast plantations as far as the eye can see.

These forest ravages forced the Indigenous peoples to leave these localities. Today, several communities who lived from hunting and gathering have lost everything.

In the central region of the country, a French industrial company Sosucam, established more than 50 years ago, has destroyed nearly 20,000 hectares of forest to cultivate sugar cane in the districts of Mbadzock, Nkoteng, and Lembe-Yezoum. In 2006, the company signed a new 99-year long-term contract with the Cameroonian State. This is the evidence that the forest destruction will continue for a long time. People will continue to complain about the destruction caused by spraying operations that lead to serious diseases, and aquatic ecosystems affected by the insecticides coming from these plantations will disappear, etc. That is why it is important to talk about it.
