On April 27, 2022, the Gateway Journalism Review hosted a conversation with Evan Osnos, an author, New Yorker staff writer, and a former Pulitzer Center grantee.
The event, moderated by Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer, focuses on the breadth of Osnos' work, from reporting on Russia-Ukraine relations to the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. His Pulitzer Center-supported work analyzed the nuclear crisis through the lens of Kim Jong Un's North Korea. The Gateway Journalism Review also took time to honor the late journalist and professor William Recktenwald with the Freedom Fighter Award during this online event.
Community members and students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Northwestern University joined the event at watch parties in Carbondale and Chicago, respectively.
Founded more than 50 years ago, the Gateway Journalism Review examines mass media with a focus on the Midwest. The Pulitzer Center has supported the publication through its 2021 investigation of police accountability and The 1857 Project, a 2020 special issue on the legacy of "slavery, segregation, and racism" in the St. Louis area.
