Anna Badkhen Weaves Stories from the Global South at Westchester Community College

Join us on Thursday, April 24 for two conversations with Pulitzer Center grantee Anna Badkhen. Badkhen will reflect on her reporting from Afghanistan and Mali as part of her two-day visit to Westchester Community College. Managing Director Nathalie Applewhite also will be on hand to discuss the Pulitzer Center's role in supporting Badken's reporting and similar projects.

Badkhen specializes in-depth coverage of the Global South. For her Pulitzer Center-supported project, "Afghanistan by Donkey," she spent a year living in an Afghan village, covering the daily lives of the villagers and revealing a side of Afghanistan that had not received such intense attention previously. Badkhen is the author of "Peace Meals: Candy-Wrapped Kalashnikovs and Other War Stories," "Waiting for the Taliban," and "The World is a Carpet: Four Seasons in an Afghan Village," the latter book based in part on her Pulitzer Center project. With Mali, Badkhen independently has covered the country's neglected systemic crises overlooked by the international aid community and the media. Her book examining the region, "Walking with Abel," is expected to be published in 2015.

Badkhen has covered wars in Asia, Africa, and Europe, and her writing has appeared in many publications, including The New Republic, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Boston Globe. Her work won the 2007 Joel R. Seldin Award for reporting on civilians in war zones.
