Health Inequities

With Pulitzer Center support of cross-border reporting, journalists around the world have been able to report on the consequences of gaps in access to even basic health services. Reporters have investigated urgent problems in their own countries, and traveled to others. They’ve also looked into the interests responsible for neglect or policies that are widening inequities.

U.S. reporters investigated unaddressed health needs of military veterans, documented how women struggle to seek abortion care, and produced stories about midwives trying to reduce Black and Indigenous maternal mortality. In Europe, reporters exposed how Poland’s tighter abortion restrictions have led to the deaths of women with unviable pregnancies. In Latin America, reporters documented denial of COVID-19 impact and declines in vaccines.

Journalists have also investigated stories as diverse as health threats to garbage sorters in Africa and foiled promises of health care for women who suffered sexual and domestic assaults in India.
