During the 2012-2013 academic year, the Pulitzer Center began a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. In the fall, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Salopek visited campus to discuss his Pulitzer Center-supported "Out of Eden" project. Penn's Graduate Student Center hosted his visit, co-sponsored by the Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership (IGEL) at the Wharton School. In the spring, the Africa Center collaborated with the Pulitzer Center on a story-telling workshop led by Pulitzer Center grantee Jina Moore. The first Penn-Pulitzer Center international reporting fellows began their assignments in Africa in summer 2013.

In 2014 the South Asia Center (SAC) and Middle East Center (MEC) launched a four-year initiative with the Pulitzer Center to host journalists on campus and support international reporting fellowships.

Currently, the SAC and the MEC at the University of Pennsylvania coordinate faculty and students drawn from many departments and several schools who develop and participate in community and campus-wide programs and activities pertaining to South Asia and the Middle East. They are funded as National Resource Centers by the US Department of Education and by the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. In the 2018-2019 academic year, MEC and SAC invited the campus-wide group, Penn in Latin America and the Caribbean (PLAC), to join the Pulitzer Center partnership. At the same time, Penn Global added significant financial support.

By 2019, 13 Penn undergraduate and graduate students from across campus–most of whom had no prior reporting experience–had become Pulitzer Center international reporting fellows.
